AHUROA ROAD SEAL EXTENSION

Ongoing Since 2017

This on-going project involves the investigation, design, and construction of a seal extension on Ahuroa Road located in Puhoi. The projects main goal is to seal approximately 9km of unsealed gravel road and aims to improve road safety and reduce dust nuisance in the area.

Safe System principles were incorporated in the design including: reduced speed limits, shape correction and consistent superelevation, crash barriers, improved signage and delineation, improved skid resistance on low radius bends, localised shoulder widening, median treatments, speed thresholds at Ahuroa School, and roadside hazard removal.

The project was incredibly complex, including advance design components such as 3D road design using Civil 3D, rural stormwater design, retaining wall design, crash barrier design, and pavement design.

Due to the complexity of the project, TES worked together with other specialists including structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, pavement engineers, planners, and arborists.

TES have taken the lead of this team of specialists from day one of the design process, starting with scheme design and progressing all the way to construction supervision.

Due to the scale of the project, the works have been split into 3 distinct stages. Stage 1 construction was completed in November 2020, with Stage 2 construction slated to begin in August 2021. Stage 3 is currently under design.
