Cyclist Safety
On-road crashes involving cyclists are often caused by a driver failing to see the cyclist. Cyclists are generally inconspicuous, as they are small, outnumbered and not a safety threat to drivers. Measures to improve cyclist safety should consider:
- Bike lanes (preferably separated) on a well-connected network;
- Slowing vehicle/bike speeds to around 30km/h;
- Advanced stop lines that place cyclists ahead of motor vehicles at intersections so motorists are more aware of cyclists;
- Right turn arrows at signals preventing filtered right turns in front of cyclists;
- Advanced green lights for cyclists allowing cyclists to depart signals early;
- Bike-activated visual warning signs to alert drivers about cyclists;
- Improved road lighting to highlight cyclists better at night;
- Cyclists wearing bright clothes and keeping their bicycle lights on for improved conspicuity;
- Prioritising vulnerable road users, by presuming liability for motorists involved in a crash unless they prove otherwise.
