Transport Mode Safety Risk

Most analysis of road injuries examines the risk experienced by people using different modes of transport. More recent research has examined the impact that specific transport modes have on other road users.

Recent research has shown that per-vehicle kilometre, buses and lorries pose much higher risk to others, while cyclists pose the lowest risk. Also, motorcycles pose a substantially higher per-km risk to others than cars. Furthermore, male drivers generally pose a higher per-km risk to others than female drivers.

Policy makers could seek to reduce disproportionate risks, for instance, by encouraging cycling and discouraging motorcycling. Also, road safety could be improved by reducing gender imbalances in jobs involving driving.
